The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
