Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
