Finest TV Picks: Seven Can't-Miss Motion Pictures In the Days Ahead

Top Selection

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary tackles the tyranny of female beauty and the dreaded aspects of ageing. The veteran actress delivers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity forced into starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying procedure known as "The Substance". This creates a youthful duplicate named Sue, leading to a progressively toxic connection among both women. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features Keira Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from writing about world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her partner, and other extremely wealthy passengers. But after a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity awaken. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their fresh home, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed film star playing himself who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

The director's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the youth frightened. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though Chastain manages to show the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4

Black Bag

This period's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as precise similar to the collars worn by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to identify a mole among the team from a group of five – among them is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of truth or lie takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
